Bootstrapping Cointegrating Regressions1

چکیده
In this paper, we consider bootstrapping cointegrating regressions. It is shown that the method of bootstrap, if properly implemented, generally yields consistent estimators and test statistics for cointegrating regressions. We do not assume any speci ̄c data generating process, and employ the sieve bootstrap based on the approximated ̄nite-order vector autoregressions for the regression errors and the ̄rst di®erences of the regressors. In particular, we establish the bootstrap consistency for OLS method. The bootstrap method can thus be used to correct for the ̄nite sample bias of the OLS estimator and to approximate the asymptotic critical values of the OLS-based test statistics in general cointegrating regressions. The bootstrap OLS procedure, however, is not e±cient. For the e±cient estimation and hypothesis testing, we consider the procedure proposed by Saikkonen (1991) and Stock and Watson (1993) relying on the regression augmented with the leads and lags of di®erenced regressors. The bootstrap versions of their procedures are shown to be consistent, and can be used to do inferences that are asymptotically valid. A Monte Carlo study is conducted to investigate the ̄nite sample performances of the proposed bootstrap methods. This version: February 18, 2002

Impacts of multivariate GARCH innovations on hypothesis testing for cointegrating vectors
This note investigates impacts of multivariate generalised autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) errors on hypothesis testing for cointegrating vectors. The study reviews a cointegrated vector autoregressive model incorporating multivariate GARCH innovations and a regularity condition required for valid asymptotic inferences. Monte Carlo experiments are then conducted on a test ...
متن کاملTesting for Neglected Nonlinearity in Cointegrating Relationships
This paper proposes pure significance tests for the absence of nonlinearity in cointegrating relationships. No assumption of the functional form of the nonlinearity is made. It is envisaged that the application of such tests could form the first step towards specifying a nonlinear cointegrating relationship for empirical modelling. The asymptotic and small sample properties of our tests are inv...
متن کاملBootstrap and fast double bootstrap tests of cointegration rank with financial time series
The likelihood ratio test of cointegration rank is the most widely used test for cointegration. Many studies have shown by simulation that the small sample distribution is not well approximated by the limiting distribution. We suggest using the bootstrap to generate small sample critical values instead of correcting the test statistics. The idea of bootstrapping the trace test of cointegration ...
متن کاملA Model of Fractional Cointegration, and Tests for Cointegration Using the Bootstrap∗
The paper proposes a framework for modelling cointegration in fractionally integrated processes, and considers methods for testing the existence of cointegrating relationships using the parametric bootstrap. In these procedures, ARFIMA models are fitted to the data, and the estimates used to simulate the null hypothesis of non-cointegration in a vector autoregressive modelling framework. The si...
متن کاملTesting for cointegration in dependent panels via residual-based bootstrap methods
We address the issue of panel cointegration testing in dependent panels, showing by simulations that tests based on the stationary bootstrap deliver good size and power performances even with small time and cross-section sample sizes and allowing for a break at a known date. They can thus be an empirically important alternative to asymptotic methods based on the estimation of common factors. Po...
